Shopify's New Tool Migrates Billing API Apps to App Pricing
Shopify can now move Billing API subscriptions to App Pricing without re-approval — but usage caps and other features don't survive the move.

What the migration tool actually moves
As of September 29, 2026, Shopify's changelog confirms a new migration path for apps still billing through the legacy Billing API: a migration tool in the Partner Dashboard, plus new shopify app subscription-migrations commands in the Shopify CLI. The headline detail is that merchants don't need to re-approve anything — subscriptions move automatically at the start of their next billing cycle (next renewal, for annual plans).
The two paths split cleanly by complexity. In the Partner Dashboard, simple subscriptions — plans without usage charges — move to a matching App Pricing plan in one click, once you've drafted and tested the equivalent App Pricing plans. Everything else — usage-based subscriptions, price adjustments, and moves to private plans — has to go through the CLI, which can list stores and migration status, schedule moves in bulk, and cancel pending migrations.
The move is scheduled, not instant — and some things don't carry over
A subscription doesn't flip the moment you click move. It changes at the start of its next billing cycle, or next renewal for an annual plan. If the move changes billing terms, Shopify emails the merchant with at least 30 days' notice before the change takes effect; if the next cycle is closer than 30 days out, the subscription stays on current terms for one more period. A subscription with an active discount simply can't move until the discount ends.
The lossy part worth budgeting for: when a subscription does move, its Billing API AppSubscription keeps its status but loses its cappedAmount field entirely — and Shopify App Pricing's usage-based plans don't support spending caps at all. If your current plan relies on a per-cycle ceiling to cap what a merchant can be charged, that protection doesn't exist on the other side of the migration.
Check your plan design against App Pricing's hard limits first
Shopify App Pricing itself imposes limits worth checking against your existing plan structure before migrating: up to 8 public plans, up to 5 active usage meters per plan, up to 6 pricing tiers per meter, and usage charges that must bill monthly — they can't be combined with yearly-only plans. None of these are migration-specific; they're standing limits of the target architecture, so a billing model that already pushes past them will need redesigning regardless of which migration path you take.
