Shopify Tax Managed Mode Breaks These API Writes
Shopify's new managed mode for Shopify Tax validates Markets API writes, product publishing, and custom line items — here's what breaks.
What Managed Mode Actually Checks
Shopify shipped managed mode for Shopify Tax on October 28, 2026, flagged as a breaking API change with action required, landing in API version 2027-01. Managed mode locks in specific tax and currency settings for stores selling into the US, and the Admin API now validates several previously-permissive writes against those requirements. If your integration writes to markets, publishes products, or sets tax behavior on custom line items, several of its calls can now behave differently.
The pattern holds across all four changes: requests that already match managed-mode requirements keep working; requests that try to override them can now fail or get silently rewritten. None of this applies to stores that don't use Shopify Tax managed mode, even if they sell to US customers — an integration serving multiple stores needs a way to tell managed-mode stores apart from the rest.
Markets API Writes Now Reject Non-Default Settings
marketCreate and marketUpdate now reject overridden currencySettings or priceInclusions for merchant-managed, non-retail markets that include the United States. Retail markets, third-party-managed markets, and markets excluding the US are excluded, and the check only fires when a request supplies currencySettings or priceInclusions. For a US-only market, the required defaults are baseCurrency: "USD", localCurrencies: false, and taxPricingStrategy: "ADD_TAXES_AT_CHECKOUT". Add a second country, such as Canada, and the defaults flip to localCurrencies: true and taxPricingStrategy: "INCLUDES_TAXES_IN_PRICE_BASED_ON_COUNTRY".
Get either wrong and the mutation returns a userErrors.code to branch on: UNSUPPORTED_CURRENCY for currency mismatches, and INCOMPATIBLE_CONFIGURATION (API version 2026-07+) or GENERIC_ERROR (earlier versions) for tax-display mismatches. An ERP or PIM pushing market configuration across many stores now needs to know, per store, whether managed mode is active before deciding whether to send currencySettings or priceInclusions at all.
Publishing Now Has a Shop-Channel Dependency
Products published to Online Store, Headless, Hydrogen, or Buy Button must also be published to Shop. On the unstable API version, a request that would leave a product on one of those channels without Shop fails outright. On dated API versions, Shopify instead adds the missing Shop publication to the request before saving it — so your integration's record of what it published can diverge from what it asked for unless it checks the actual response. The same rule applies to publishablePublish, publishableUnpublish, publicationUpdate, and the deprecated productPublish/productUnpublish mutations.
taxable Is on Its Way Out for Custom Line Items
DraftOrderLineItemInput.taxable and the taxable argument on orderEditAddCustomItem are deprecated starting API version 2027-01, in favor of productCategoryId, which assigns a Standard Product Taxonomy category and lets Shopify derive tax treatment itself. On managed-mode stores, taxable is already ignored on custom line items in every API version — an uncategorized custom line item is taxed at the standard rate regardless of what taxable says.
If your integration sets taxable to zero-rate a custom line item on a managed-mode store, that call is already a no-op. Move to productCategoryId for item-level exemptions, or mark the customer, company, or location tax-exempt to zero out an entire order. This is rolling out gradually to managed-mode stores, so confirm which merchants are enrolled before touching this code.
