Shopify's Ship-and-Pickup-in-One-Order: What Apps Must Fix

Shopify's Plus/Enterprise checkout can now split one order into shipped and pickup fulfillments. Here's what breaks and the deadlines to plan around.

One Order, Two Delivery Methods

Since May 2026 Shopify has been rolling out "ship and pickup in one order," a Plus and Enterprise-only checkout capability that lets a single order carry both a shipped delivery group and a local-pickup delivery group, instead of forcing the buyer into two separate orders, one per method. It only applies when a merchant has both shipping and local pickup enabled, at which point buyers choose store pickup or shipping per item in their cart during checkout. Mechanically, this produces one order containing multiple fulfillment orders: one for the shipped items, one for pickup.

No New Fields, But New Combinations

Shopify is explicit that it introduced no new API fields and no breaking schema changes. What changed is the combinations existing fields can now return. Checkouts can carry multiple deliveryGroups, where each group represents a different fulfillment path for a subset of items. Orders can contain fulfillment orders tagged with different delivery methods, SHIPPING and PICK_UP, within the same order. And each FulfillmentOrder now carries a delivery_method field identifying which method it belongs to. For any integration that assumed one order maps to one delivery method, that assumption now needs to branch per fulfillment order, not per order. Shopify's own guidance is to audit app logic for exactly that assumption and fix it before the feature reaches a merchant's live checkout.

The Rollout Timeline

The rollout runs on a fixed schedule. Feature preview opened for developers on May 19, 2026; merchants could opt in through Test Drive starting June 17, 2026; Cart API support expands the feature beyond checkout on October 12, 2026, including the ability to split partially-unavailable pickup items into shipping; and full rollout to all eligible Plus and Enterprise shops completes July 1, 2027, with no opt-out for qualified merchants. Shopify's own warning is blunt about what happens to apps that skip the update: they may cause checkout errors, incorrect calculations, or failed fulfillment routing. For ERP, OMS, and 3PL integrations built against the one-order-one-fulfillment assumption, July 2027 is the hard deadline, but merchants already testing in Test Drive can hit breakage well before then.

What to Audit Before July 2027

Shopify's own testing guidance for this feature preview is specific: create a dev store on the Plus plan, enable the "Ship and pickup" feature preview on it, then place a test order containing both shipped and pickup items end-to-end. The point of that test is to confirm your integration reads the delivery_method field on each fulfillment order and routes it accordingly, rather than reading a single delivery method off the order as a whole. Any workflow, notification, or routing rule that currently keys off order-level shipping data is the place to start looking.
