Shopify Ties Return Policies to Markets as Structured Data
Shopify's API 2026-10 makes return policy rules structured data markets reference directly — what read_legal_policies and write_markets unlock for ERPs.
Shopify's API version 2026-10, stable since October 1, 2026, turns return policy rules into structured data that a market can reference directly, instead of free-text legal copy. The new returnPolicyProfile and returnPolicyProfiles queries, a returnPolicyProfile field on Market, and returnPolicyProfileId and removeReturnPolicyProfile on MarketUpdateInput give the Admin API its first queryable source of truth for what a market's return policy actually allows.
What's Actually in a ReturnPolicyProfile
A ReturnPolicyProfile object carries a default flag marking the shop's default profile, an optional merchant-defined name that's null on the default profile, the list of markets it applies to, and two rule objects: editRules, which govern buyer-initiated edit and cancellation requests, and returnRules, which govern returns. Both behave the same way when absent: when editRules is null, customers can request cancellations without restriction; when returnRules is null, customers can return items without restriction. Reading a profile requires the read_legal_policies access scope.
Wiring a Profile to a Market
Markets pick up a profile through the Market.returnPolicyProfile field, and marketCreate and marketUpdate can assign or remove one: set returnPolicyProfileId on MarketUpdateInput to assign a profile, or removeReturnPolicyProfile to true to clear it. Reading Market objects requires read_markets; assigning a profile through a mutation additionally requires write_markets. That scope split matters for integration design, since a service that only needs to read what policy applies to a market doesn't need write access to touch it.
Why This Matters for ERPs and 3PLs
Return windows and rules routinely differ by market. An EU market and a US market on the same shop rarely run identical return policies, and until this release, nothing in the Admin API exposed that as structured, queryable data. Integrations that track per-market return windows have had to hardcode them or maintain them by hand outside Shopify. returnPolicyProfile and returnPolicyProfiles give those systems a first-class, per-market source of truth to query instead.
What This API Doesn't Touch
It's worth being precise about scope here: this is a distinct API from Shopify's market-hierarchy features, marketRelationships, parentMarkets, childMarkets, and from buyer-requested order edits, RequestedOrderEdit. ReturnPolicyProfile is specifically about the rules a market enforces on edits and returns, not order-edit workflow, and not market structure. Whether assigning a profile triggers the same asynchronous rebuild documented for market-hierarchy changes isn't stated anywhere in Shopify's current docs, so don't assume it does.
