Shopify's Split Shipping Deprecation: What 3PL Integrations Must Fix

Shopify is replacing split shipping with rate consolidation — and 3PL, OMS, and ERP integrations working at order level are most likely to break.

Shopify is phasing out the split shipping setting. If you build or maintain a 3PL, OMS, or ERP integration that still reasons in terms of "the order" instead of "the fulfillment order," Shopify's own rollout guidance says you're the integration most likely to break — and it gives a hard date for when the old behavior disappears.

What split shipping gets wrong today

Today, split shipping calculates the number of expected packages based on location, timing, and rate. That math breaks down in ordinary cases: products sitting in separate profiles — Shopify's own example is a free gift — can produce extra expected shipments at checkout, even when the merchant ships everything in one box. The checkout shows a shipment count that doesn't match what actually happens in the warehouse.

Rate consolidation is the replacement

Shopify is phasing out the split shipping setting entirely, and checkout will instead show the exact number of expected shipments based on order routing logic. The mechanism arrives through market-driven shipping, via a feature called rate consolidation: when more than one shipping rate applies to the same order, checkout applies the right combined shipping price instead of adding rates together or showing shipments the merchant never intended. Shopify's documentation describes the outcome — one correct combined price — without detailing the algorithm behind it.

Why order-level integrations are the ones at risk

Shopify's own fulfillment architecture already produces multiple fulfillments from a single order — split by location, shipping rate, delivery promise, or delivery method. Order routing decides how many shipments an order becomes at the fulfillment-order level, not the order level. A 3PL, OMS, or ERP integration that still treats "the order" as one shippable unit has no hook into that routing decision — it keeps assuming a single shipment, or the old sometimes-wrong package count, while checkout and fulfillment show something else. That's exactly the gap Shopify is calling out by name.

The rollout dates, and what to test now

The schedule is explicit: from August 2026 through July 1, 2027, Shopify is rolling out split shipping and market-driven shipping together, by merchant risk cohort, starting with low-risk shops. On July 1, 2027, split shipping becomes the default for qualified checkouts. Shopify's guidance to partners is direct: test any app, workflow, or integration that touches delivery, fulfillment, or order logic, and pay particular attention if your system still operates at order level instead of fulfillment order level. If that describes your integration, the fix isn't optional — it's a rewrite of the assumption the integration was built on, and the clock is already running.
