Stripe Connect Stablecoin Payouts: What's Actually Live
Stripe Connect now supports USDC payouts to connected accounts — but it's private preview, US-platforms-only, and individuals-only. Here's what that rules out.
Stripe added a genuinely new mechanic to Connect: stablecoin payouts, letting a platform pay connected accounts in USDC while the platform's own balance stays in fiat. It isn't a rebrand of existing cross-border payouts. It also isn't generally available — it ships as a private preview with real, named restrictions that rule it out for most marketplaces today.
What private preview actually gates
Stablecoin payouts are currently in private preview and only available to Connect platforms based in the United States. Getting access starts with contacting Stripe sales, then working through a defined sequence: request access to the preview, wait around two business days for a response, request the feature through the Dashboard, fill out a due diligence questionnaire on the Account status page, and complete additional account requirements. Only after Stripe reviews and approves that submission can a platform start making stablecoin payouts — verifiable by checking that Crypto shows as active in Payment methods settings. None of this is a toggle a developer flips on their own.
How the mechanics actually work
Once a platform opts in and enables the Express Dashboard, a connected-account user can link a crypto wallet and set their default currency to USDC. That gives the account a USDC balance that works like any other local-currency balance: the platform transfers funds into it, and payouts land in the linked crypto wallet instead of a bank account. Transfers created in USD automatically convert to the recipient's preferred currency. It's worth keeping this distinct from Stripe's separate stablecoin payment-acceptance capability — accepting stablecoin payments from customers is a different feature from paying out connected accounts in stablecoins.
What the restrictions rule out
Stripe's own limitations list is short and specific. Only Connect platforms in the US can make stablecoin payouts. Payouts can currently go only to individuals or sole proprietors in supported countries — companies and non-profits aren't supported yet. Payout recipients must have access to the Express Dashboard. And the platform must use the Transfers API specifically to pay out in stablecoins, not another payout mechanism. For a typical multi-seller marketplace with company-structured sellers, a non-US platform entity, or a payout flow built on a different API, none of today's stablecoin payouts apply yet. Whether that changes depends on Stripe moving this out of private preview — something the documentation gives no date for.
