Shopify's Checkout and Accounts Configuration API, Mapped
Shopify's new Checkout and Accounts Configuration API replaces checkoutBrandingUpsert — here's exactly what maps where.

One API Replaces Two
As of API version 2026-04, shipped May 13, 2026, Shopify introduced the Checkout and Accounts Configuration API, driven by the checkoutAndAccountsConfigurationUpdate mutation. It's exclusive to Shopify Plus merchants and replaces two now-deprecated APIs: the Checkout Profile API and the Checkout Branding API's checkoutBrandingUpsert mutation. Where checkoutBrandingUpsert styled checkout alone against a checkout profile ID, the new API styles checkout, customer accounts, and sign-in from a single configuration object addressed by a configuration ID. checkoutBrandingUpsert still works — Shopify's own schema reference for it now reads "Deprecated. Use checkoutAndAccountsConfigurationUpdate instead" — but there's no published removal date, so this is a migration-planning signal, not a fire drill.
Where Your Existing Fields Actually Land
Shopify published an explicit field map. designSystem.colors.global becomes branding.designTokens.colors.palette, still capped at 20 hex colors, plus branding.components.shared.colors; designSystem.colors.schemes becomes per-surface branding.surfaces.*.components.*.colors instead of referencing a fixed scheme; designSystem.typography and designSystem.cornerRadius move to branding.designTokens.typography and branding.designTokens.cornerRadius, unchanged in shape. customizations.primaryButton, .header, .footer, .main, .orderSummary, .favicon, and .control all move under branding.components.*, with checkout-specific overrides additionally living under branding.surfaces.checkout.components.*.
What Has No Old Equivalent
Two full surfaces are new: branding.surfaces.customerAccounts and branding.surfaces.signIn, letting you brand the customer-accounts and sign-in experiences independently of checkout for the first time through this API. Section styling also picked up a shadow property, NONE, SMALL_100, SMALL_200, or BASE, with no Checkout Branding API equivalent, and the sign-in surface's main area supports a backgroundImage — useful since sign-in is otherwise the most minimal of the three surfaces, limited to header logo and padding plus main color roles.
Before You Touch Any Code
Apps need read_checkout_and_accounts_configurations and write_checkout_and_accounts_configurations access scopes — the old checkout-branding scope doesn't carry over. Configurations are retrieved via the checkoutAndAccountsConfigurations query using configuration IDs, not checkout profile IDs, so any code that stores or looks up a checkoutProfileId needs a data-model change, not just a mutation swap. Shopify hasn't stated whether design tokens migrate automatically from an existing checkout profile, so treat that as unconfirmed and re-verify branding after cutting over.
