Stripe's Automatic Transfer Rules for Connect Payouts

Stripe's May 2026 release lets platforms route a connected account's payout balance into a Financial Account automatically, no manual sweep required.

On May 27, 2026, Stripe's Dahlia API release shipped two Connect capabilities in the same update: configurable custom start-of-day payout timing per connected account, and automatic transfer rules that move funds from a connected account's payments balance into a Financial Account during scheduled payouts. The second is a genuinely new mechanic for marketplace and platform architecture — it replaces manual balance-sweep code with a rule the API executes automatically whenever a payout would otherwise fire.

What Shipped

Stripe's changelog describes it plainly: platforms can now programmatically configure automatic transfers from their payments balance to a Financial Account. Per Stripe's Treasury documentation, automatic transfer rules enable platforms to automatically split funds from a connected account's payments balance to a financial account during scheduled payouts, eliminating the need for manual calculations and transfers. Rules are configured per currency through the Balance Settings API, at payments.payouts.automatic_transfer_rules_by_currency, with each rule specifying a payout_method (the destination Financial Account's ID) and a type of either transfer_all or transfer_up_to_amount.

Prerequisites the API Enforces

Three conditions have to be true before a rule will run: the connected account needs at least one active Financial Account, the account has to be on an automatic (not manual) payout schedule, and the destination Financial Account has to support the currency being transferred. Automatic payouts are disabled whenever payments.payouts.schedule.interval is set to manual — a platform has to explicitly enable an automatic schedule (daily, weekly, or monthly) before a transfer rule can activate. Stripe allows setting one Financial Account per currency as the automatic-transfer destination, and the rule can also be configured for accounts that were previously on a manual schedule, once that schedule is changed.

The Two Rule Types

transfer_all moves the entire available balance for that currency into the Financial Account on every scheduled payout, and it doesn't require the connected account to have an external bank account configured. transfer_up_to_amount caps the transfer at a specified amount and routes any remainder to the connected account's external bank account instead — which does require a bank account configured for that currency. If the available balance is smaller than the cap, the entire balance goes to the Financial Account rather than being split.

For platforms running Treasury-backed Financial Accounts alongside Connect, this closes a gap that previously required custom code: watching payout schedules and manually calculating how much of a seller's balance to route into treasury versus their bank. The rule now lives in account configuration instead of application logic.
